Ravallion (2005) analysed whether there is a trade off between poverty and inequality and found that income inequality is associated with a fall in the incidence of poverty while a rise in income inequality stagnates poverty reduction instead of facilitating it. Again difficult to generalise, but it’s an interesting chart nevertheless: Mind you, this doesn’t say the cost of living has fallen, just that nominal income growth has exceeded nominal expenditure growth.
